About

Kai Mentzer began his career in service to the United States as a Nuclear, Biological, Chemical, and Radiological Specialist in the U.S. Army, where he gained critical experience in both domestic and international operations, including Afghanistan, South Korea, and across the United States. This early foundation instilled in him the values of discipline, resilience, and leadership that have carried throughout his healthcare career.

In 2007, Kai transitioned into healthcare, starting in a non-profit community hospital before joining the Department of Veterans Affairs as a Technical Career Field Intern at the Southern Arizona VA Healthcare System in 2009. His professional path has included leadership positions across the country, notably at the Bay Pines VA Health Care System, where he oversaw one of the largest Environmental Management Services in the nation with nearly 400 staff. His roles there also included Acting Chief Logistics Officer and Integrated Ethics Program Officer, where he guided operations, compliance, and ethical decision-making.

Kai’s leadership journey continued with progressively senior positions, including Assistant and Associate Director roles in Shreveport, Louisiana, and Jackson, Mississippi. From 2021 to 2024, he served as Medical Center Director of the G.V. (Sonny) Montgomery VA Medical Center in Jackson before being appointed as the Executive Director of the Atlanta VA Healthcare System in June 2024. In this role, he serves as Chief Executive Officer of one of the largest VA systems in the country, responsible for the administrative and clinical operations of the AVAHCS and 22 outpatient clinics that provide care to nearly 190,000 Veterans across Georgia. He oversees a budget of $1.5 billion and leads more than 5,000 employees in delivering primary, specialty, and tertiary care.

Throughout his career, Kai has remained dedicated to advancing leadership capacity within VA. He is a 2015 graduate of the Health Care Leadership Development Program, where he continues to serve as a coach, and has been a VHA-certified mentor since 2010. He is also a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives. His educational background includes a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of Arizona and a Master of Science in Organizational Leadership from Columbia Southern University.
