Dr. Shan K. Bagby is a retired U.S. Army Brigadier General, board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon, and nationally recognized healthcare executive known for leading large, complex organizations through service, strategy, and authentic leadership. During his 30-year military career, he served in senior clinical, command, and executive leadership roles that shaped military healthcare while developing leaders at every level of the organization.

Throughout his career, Dr. Bagby earned a reputation for leading with purpose, building trust, and creating cultures where people and organizations could thrive. His command experience spanned more than two decades and included leadership assignments across the United States and overseas, culminating in his roles as Commanding General of Brooke Army Medical Center, the Department of Defense’s only Level I Trauma Center, and Commanding General of Regional Health Command-Central. In those roles, he led a healthcare enterprise serving more than 600,000 beneficiaries across 20 states while overseeing a workforce of 22,000 healthcare professionals and support personnel.

Dr. Bagby also served as the 28th Chief of the U.S. Army Dental Corps, where he was the Army’s senior dental officer and principal advisor on dental readiness, policy, and strategy. In this role, he helped shape the future of military dentistry by guiding policy and resource decisions that supported the readiness of soldiers around the world. Throughout his career, he demonstrated that exceptional leadership requires more than technical expertise. It demands self-awareness, intentional growth, and a commitment to developing others.

Following his military retirement, Dr. Bagby has continued his passion for leadership development as a speaker, educator, consultant, and mentor. He chairs corporate and foundation boards, holds the National Association of Corporate Directors Directorship Certification, and works with healthcare organizations and academic institutions to develop leaders capable of navigating today’s most complex challenges. He remains deeply committed to helping others recognize that culture is not something that happens by chance. It is built through consistent leadership, thoughtful decisions, and everyday actions.

Dr. Bagby earned his bachelor’s degree in Physics from Rutgers University before receiving his Doctor of Dental Medicine degree from the University of Pittsburgh. He completed his residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at King/Drew Medical Center in Los Angeles and a trauma fellowship at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. He also earned a Master of Healthcare Administration from Baylor University and a Master of Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives.

Today, Dr. Bagby continues to inspire leaders across healthcare and beyond by sharing lessons drawn from a lifetime of service. His leadership philosophy is grounded in authenticity, humility, and the belief that the greatest measure of success is the ability to develop others and leave every organization stronger than you found it.
