Sharon R. Bannister is a retired U.S. Air Force Major General and nationally recognized healthcare executive known for her strategic leadership, commitment to service, and ability to lead complex organizations through transformational change. During her 31-year military career, she served in a variety of senior executive roles, spending more than 15 years leading healthcare organizations and shaping policy across the Military Health System.

Throughout her career, Dr. Bannister earned a reputation as a trusted leader who brought people together to solve complex challenges. She helped drive policy and strategic direction for the Department of Defense’s $52 billion healthcare system during one of the most significant periods of Military Health System reform. Serving in key leadership positions within the Department of the Air Force, the Defense Health Agency, and the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs, she led the development and execution of strategies that produced multibillion-dollar results while building inclusive, high-performing teams united by a shared mission.

As a four-time military commander, Dr. Bannister held responsibility for every aspect of healthcare operations, including clinical services, resource management, budgeting, personnel, risk management, and community relations for hospitals and clinics in both deployed and stateside environments. She also served as the 20th Chief of the U.S. Air Force Dental Corps, where she directed dental policy and operational guidance for a global dental enterprise. Across the Department of Defense, Department of Veterans Affairs, Congress, and the broader healthcare community, she is widely respected for her expertise, collaborative leadership, and advocacy.

In addition to her military service, Dr. Bannister has been a national leader in organized dentistry. She served on the Board of Trustees of the American Academy of Periodontology and the Board of Directors of the AAP Foundation, where she also served as Board President. A board-certified periodontist, she is a Fellow of both the American College of Dentistry and the International College of Dentists.

Today, Dr. Bannister continues her commitment to service through leadership roles with several nonprofit and professional organizations. She serves on the Board of Directors for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund, the Military Women’s Memorial Foundation, the Be Good Foundation, and Dog Tag. She is also Co-Chair of the Miami University College of Arts and Science Alumni Advisory Board and serves on the Leadership Council for the Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences School of Dental Medicine.

Dr. Bannister earned her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine and Master of Science degrees in Periodontics from The University of Texas Health Science Center and National Resource Strategy from the National Defense University Industrial College of the Armed Forces. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry from Miami University, where she was later awarded an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters in recognition of her distinguished career and service.
